An undated manuscript relating to Cockersand Abbey, Lan cashire records that “Elthredus [genuit] Ketellum” [1]. His parent age is confirmed by a charter of William [I] de Lancaster to York St L eonard’s, confirming a donation by his "avunculus" Ketel fitz Eldred , from which it can be deduced that William’s mother was Ketel’s s ister (assuming that avunculus is interpreted in its strict sense of m aternal uncle) [2]. "Chetellus filius Eldred" donated "ecclesiam de Mo rlund… et ecclesiam de Brounefeld… et ecclesiam de Wirkynton" to S t Bees, with the consent of "uxoris mee Christiane et Willelmi filii m ei", by undated charter, witnessed by "Cristiana uxore mea, Willelmo f ilio meo, Archil senescaldo, Yvone filio Forni…" [3]. "Chetellus fil ius Eltred" donated "ecclesiam de Morlund… et ecclesiam de Wirchingt on" to York St Mary by undated charter, witnessed by "Christiana uxor e mea, Willelmo filio meo, Archibaldo senescallo" [4]. "Ranulfus Mesch inus filius Willelmi Meschin" confirmed the donation of land "in Wirch intuna" donated by "Chetellus filius Heltredi" to St Bees by undated c harter [5].
