The Hyde Register lists "Herbertus camerarius, Arnu lfus filius eius, Emma uxor eius" immediately after the names of Kin g Henry I and his first wife [1]. Secondary sources state that she wa s Emma de Blois, illegitimate daughter of Etienne Comte de Blois & hi s mistress ---. This is presumably based on the Chronicle of Meaux, i n Yorkshire, which names "comitis --- Herberti filius, ex Emma soror e regis Anglorum Stephani progenitus" [2]. As this source is dated t o [1394/1400], it is unlikely to be conclusive in relation to events w hich occurred 250 years earlier in the absence of other corroborativ e evidence. Eyton includes no reference to any wife of Herbert FitzHen ry in his article on the barony of FitzHerbert [3]. Until further evid ence comes to light, it is suggested that the information be considere d with caution. If it is correct, the chronology of the FitzHerbert fa mily dictates that Emma must have been born while her supposed fathe r was still young, maybe even before his marriage to Adela of Englan d in 1080.
