Robert de Ferrers was created Earl of Derby in 1138 a s a reward for his services fighting the Scots at the battle of the St andard, although he and his immediate successors are referred to in co ntemporary charters as "comes de Ferrariis" [1]. The Earldom of Derb y was forfeited by Robert Earl of Derby in 1266, and was granted to Ed mund "Crouchback" Earl of Lancaster, son of King Henry III, who did no t use the title [2]. Edmund's grandson, Henry of Lancaster (who succee ded his father as Earl of Lancaster in 1345), was created Earl of Derb y 16 Mar 1337. His estates in Derbyshire were inherited by his older d aughter Blanche who married (as his first wife) John "of Gaunt" Duke o f Lancaster, son of King Edward III. They were merged with the crown w hen John's son succeeded as King Henry IV in 1399. King Henry VII revi ved the earldom in 1485 in favour of Thomas Stanley, his stepfather. T he earldom remained in the Stanley family until the present day.
