| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISHNOBILITYMEDIEVAL3.htm RALPH Ba sset, son of --- (-after 1124). Orderic Vitalis names "Goisfredus de C lintona, Radulfus Basset et Hugo de Bocalanda…" among those who wer e "de ignobili stirpe" and whom King Henry I raised "de pulvere" (fro m the dust) [1]. Henry of Huntingdon names "Ralph Basset and his son R ichard, justices of all England" [2]. Henry I King of England confirme d property ot Eynsham abbey by charter dated 25 Dec 1109, including th e donation of "decimam suam de Strattona" by "Gillebertus Basset" an d "decimam suam de una hida de Estelai" by "Radulfus Basset" [3]. "… Radulfo Basset" witnessed the charter dated 1113 granted by Henry I Ki ng of England in favour of Thorney abbey [4]. "Radulfus Basset et uxo r eius A." donated land "in villa… Chinalton" by charter dated 112 0 witnessed by "…Willelmus Basset et Ricardus Basset" [5]. "…Rad B asset…" subscribed the charter dated to [10 Apr/29 May] 1121 which r ecords the arrangements for the marriage of "Miloni de Gloec" and "Sib ilia filia Beorndi de Novo Mercato" [6]. The Chronicle of Abingdon rec ords that "Turstinus" [=Thurstan Le Despencer] donated "ecclesiam de M ercham" to "cuidam ex regis clericis (Radulfo… de Tamewrtha)", afte r recording the dispute between Thurstan and Abingdon monastery concer ning that church [7]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records in 1124 that " Ralph Basset held a court of the king’s thanes at Hundehoh in Leices tershire and hanged there more thieves than ever before" [8]. Militar y fee certifications in the Red Book of the Exchequer, in 1166, recor d that "Radulfus Basset" used to hold one knight’s fee from the abbo t of Glastonbury in Somerset "tempore Regis Henrici" (presumably indic ating King Henry I) now held by "hæres Radulfi Basset junioris" [9] . It is possible that "Radulfus Basset" was the paternal uncle of "Rad ulfi Basset junioris" although no proof has been found that this is co rrect. Another possibility is that "Radulfus", referring to the senio r Basset, was an error for "Richardus" who is recorded elsewhere as th e father of "Radulfi Basset junioris" (see above).
