The family of the comtes de Luxembourg retained p roperty in Bidgau in the 11th century but they are not recorded as Gra fen von Bidgau after the early part of the century. They are, however , recorded as avoués of the abbeys of St Maximin and Echternach durin g this period which demonstrates their continuing important role in th e affairs of the county. The archbishopric of Trier progressively expa nded its temporal power over large parts of the county and by 26 Jun 9 73, the date of a charter by which Emperor Otto II granted extensive l ands north of the Mosel to Archbishop Theoderich [8], the county of Bi dgau had virtually disappeared.
