A charter dated 943 refers to "Gozl ines… miles… ex nobilissimis regni Chlotarii ducens prosapia" (th e wording implying that he was then deceased) and the donation by "uxo r eius Uda et filius eius… Regingerus" to St Maximin at Trier of pro perty "Hunzelinesdorph", subscribed by "Ogonis abbatis, Friderici, Gis ilberti, Sigeberti fratrum predicti Gozlini" [1]. "Otto… rex" confir med a donation of property "Dauantri in pago… Hamalant in comitatu W ichmanni comitis…" inherited by "Uda nostra nepta" by charter date d 28 Aug 960 [2]. "Uda… comitissa" donated property "in pago Rizzigo wi cui Egylolfus comes" to St Maximin at Trier "pro remedio… seniori que mei Gozlini necnon filiorum meorum Henrici… et Reginheri, Godefr idi quoque et Adalberonis" by charter dated 18 May 963 witnessed by "S igefrido comite, Richwino comite" [3]. Sh e was the daughter of Count Gerard of Metz. Her mother Oda of Saxony w as a daughter of Otto I, Duke of Saxony and thus a member of the Liudo lfings. One of her brothers was Henry the Fowler. Because of this fami ly connection Oda was a cousin of the first Holy Roman Emperor, Ott o I the Great. In 930, Oda married Gozlin, Count of Bidgau and Methin gau, who gained fame as military commander for his brother, Adalbero n I of Metz. Because she outlived her husband by twenty years, she wa s head of the household and ran the estate and lands until their child ren had reached adulthood. They had the following children: Reginar , count of Bastogne (d. 18 Apr 963) Henry (d. 6 Sep 1000) Godfrey (9 35/940 – 3 Sep 995/1002), count of Verdun Adalberon (935/940 – 2 3 Jan 989), archbishop of Reims 969-989 |
