An undated manuscript relating to Cockersand Abbey, La ncashire records that “Ketellus [genuit] Gilbertum” [Dugdale ''Mon asticon'' VI.2, Cokersand Abbey, Lancashire VI, p. 909]. As noted abov e, this statement is contradicted by the charter cited above which des cribes Ketel as “avunculus” of Gilbert’s son William. This sugge sts that the more likely family relationship is that Gilbert’s wif e was the sister of Ketel.
