| Nota | SIR PHILIP DE ORREBY (presumably son of Herbert son of Alard, otherwis e Herbert de Orreby), born probably ca 1160, appears to have entered t he service of the Earls of Chester at an early age, and to have been i n constant attendance upon Earl Ranulph after his succession as Earl . He was justiciar of Chester in 1207, or earlier, till his resignatio n of the office in 1229. He married, 1stly, Emma, daughter of Marger y DE COVENTRE, whom the Earl, as her guardian, gave him in marriage. H e married, 2ndly, Alice DE BAUMVILLE. He died circa 1230, dower bein g allowed to his widow Alice by her son Fulk de Orreby. [Complete Peer age X:168-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] Herbert de Orreby, son o f Alard, was Constable to Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, and to hi s son-in-law, Simon de St. Liz, Earl of Northampton, after Simon's mar riage to the Countess Alice, daughter and heir of Earl Gilbert; and i t was presumably by the service of constable that he held Orby (in whi ch place he granted land to the monks of Bardney), of the two Earls su ccessively, as did his son John, after him, of Gilbert de Gant II. Pro of has not been found that Philip was one of the younger sons--probabl y the 2nd--of Herbert, son of Alard, by Agnes his wife, daughter of Si mon FitzWilliam (of Kyme), named probably after her brother Philip d e Kyme, but there is a strong presumption that it was the fact.
