His birth date is confirmed by the Annals o f Waverley which record the death “in nocte Sancti Clementis” in 1 183 of “Willelmus comes Glocestriæ”, specifying that it was the s ame day he was born [1]. The ''Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione' ' of Tewkesbury Abbey records that “comes Willielmus filius et hære s eiusdem” succeeded on the death of Robert Earl of Gloucester [2] . He witnessed an agreement in 1128. He was imprisoned with his fathe r at Rochester in Oct 1141 by the forces of King Stephen. Governor o f Wareham 1144, during his father’s absence in Normandy. He succeede d his father in 1147 as Earl of Gloucester. The ''Gesta Stephani Regis '' records that "Willelmus filius suus… senior… ætate" succeede d as Earl of Gloucester on the death of his father, dated from the con text to [1147] [3]. The Annals of Margan record that “comes Gloucest riæ Willelmus… et comitissa Hawysia” were captured “in castell o Cardiviæ” by the Welsh in 1158 [4]. On his death, King Henry II t ook the honour of Gloucester and the Earldom into his own hands [5]. R obert of Torigny records the death in 1183 of "Guillermus comes Gloece striæ" leaving three daughters as his heirs [6]. The Annals of Marga n record the death “IX Kal Dec” in 1183 of “Willelmus comes Glou cestriæ” [7]. The Obituary of Lyre records the death 23 Nov of “W illelmus comes Glocestriæ” [8]. The Annals of Waverley record the d eath “in nocte Sancti Clementis” in 1183 of “Willelmus comes Glo cestriæ”, specifying that it was the same day he was born [9].
