The ''Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione'' of Tewkesbury A bbey names “Gilberto” as son of “Amiciam, Ricardo de Clare nupta m” and his succession as Earl of Gloucester [1]. He succeeded his fa ther in 1217 as 4th Earl of Hertford. He was recognised as Earl of Glo ucester in Nov 1217 soon after the death of his maternal aunt Isabel C tss of Gloucester. The ''Annales Cambriæ'' record the death in 1230 o f "Gilbertus comes Gloverniæ" [2]. The ''Annales Londonienses'' recor d the death in 1230 of "Gilbertus de Clare comes Gloucestriæ" [3]. Th e Annals of Dunstable record that “comes Gloucestriæ” died in 123 0 [4]. He died while returning from an expedition to Brittany [5]. Th e ''Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione'' of Tewkesbury Abbey recor ds the death “apud Penros in minori Brytannia” in 1230 of “Gilbe rto… Gloucestriæ et Hertfordiæ comes” and his burial “in eccle sia nostra de Tewkes” [6]. The Annals of Tewkesbury record the deat h “in nocte Sanctorum Crispini et Crispiniani apud Penros in Britann ia” of “Gilbertus de Clare comes Gloucestriæ et Hertfordiæ” an d his burial in “ecclesiæ beatæ Mariæ Theokesberiæ” [7]. The A nnals of Worcester record the death in 1230 of “Gilbertus comes Glou cestriæ” [8].
