As "Alberico de Ver" he attested a charter of Conan I I Duke of Brittany [1], who ruled in his own name from 1057 to 1066. W illiam I King of England granted him estates, particularly in north Es sex, south Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. He attested a royal charter a s Chamberlain [camerarius] in 1084. [Domesday Book records “the lan d which belonged to Earl Aubrey”, including Compton, Durrington, Win terslow, in Wiltshire, Iffley and Minster in Oxfordshire [2]. It is no t certain that these entries apply to Aubrey de Vere who has not bee n identified with the comital title in other sources. In addition, th e unusual heading to the section "the land which belonged to…" sugge sts that it may have been confiscated or relinquished before the dat e of Domesday.] Domesday Book records “Aubrey de Vere” holding num erous properties in Essex [3]. He acted as Sheriff of Berkshire in [11 06] [4]. The Chronicle of Abingdon records a donation by "dapiferi Alb rici… et uxore eius Beatrice", with the consent of "eorum filiis
