Simeon of Durham names "Aldred , Eadulf and Cospatric" as the three sons of "Uchtred", stating that " Aldred" succeeded his paternal uncle Eadulf Cudel in Northumbria [1] . He is named as son of Uhtred by Roger of Hoveden, first of the thre e sons he lists [2]. He succeeded his paternal uncle as Earl of Northu mbria. Simeon of Durham records that Ealdred killed "the murderer Thur ebrand" to avenge his father, made peace with "Carl the son of Thurebr and", but the latter killed "Aldred" in "the wood called Risewood" [3] . m ---.
