She is called “Emma” in the Complete Peerage [1] , but the primary source on which this is based has not been identifie d. A manuscript relating to St Werburgh´s Chester records that “Hug o Lupus filius ducis Britanniæ et nepos Gulielmi magni ex sorore” t ransformed the foundation into a monastery [2]. This suggests that Hug ues´s mother may have been a uterine sister of King William, and ther efore daughter of Herluin de Conteville. However, no indication has be en in other primary sources which supports the contention that Hugue s was the son of a duke of Brittany. It is assumed therefore that bot h lines of his parentage have been romanticised in this document to im prove his status and reputation. Another possibility is that she was r elated to the Grantmesnil family: Orderic Vitalis records that “Rodb ertus, Unfridi filius” [Robert of Rhuddlan, son of Onfroi de Tilleu l and his wife Adelise de Grantmesnil] went “cum Hugone consobrino s uo, Richardi de Abrincis cognomento Goz filio” to England [3].
