His parentage is recorde d by Orderic Vitalis [1]. He succeeded his father in [1129] as Earl o f Chester, Vicomte d'Avranches. Stephen King of England appointed hi m Constable of Lincoln. Earl Ranulf fought against King Stephen at Lin coln in 1141 and was seized by the king at court in Northampton 29 Au g 1146. King Stephen nevertheless granted him the castle and city of L incoln, probably after 1151. Robert of Torigny records the death in 11 53 of "Ranulfus comes Cestriæ" [2]. The ''Annales Cambriæ'' record t he death in 1154 of "Radulphus comes Urbis Legionum" [3]. A manuscrip t narrating the descent of Hugh Earl of Chester to Alice Ctss of Linco ln records the death “XVI Kal Jan” of “Ranulfus de Gernons” an d his burial at St Werburgh´s, Chester [4]. It was alleged that he wa s poisoned by his wife and by William Peverell of Nottingham [5].
