| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/PARIS%20REGION%20NOBILITY.htm Dion su ggested that the castles of Montfort and Epernon were constructed as t win protection for the castle of Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines, which wa s a preferred residence of Robert II King of France and lay approximat ely equidistant between Montfort to the north towards Paris and Eperno n to the south in the direction of Chartres [1]. As noted below, the c onstruction of both castles was probably started in the early 11th cen tury. The seigneurs de Montfort-l'Amaury were vassals of the comtes d e Beaumont [sur-Oise], as shown by the charter dated to before 1091 un der which "Mainerium, fratrem Symonis de Monte Forti" donated property , with the consent of "…comiteque Belli Montis Ivonis" [2]. After th e death in 1118 of Guillaume “Crespin” Comte d´Evreux, the count y of Evreux passed to his nephew Amaury Seigneur de Montfort, althoug h Orderic Vitalis records that Henry I King of England "took the count y of Evreux into his own hands" because Amaury "had forfeited the king 's favour by his effrontery" [3]. Orderic records that Amaury led a ma jor rebellion and captured the town of Evreux [4], after which King He nry besieged the castle, before the two parties were reconciled by Kin g Henry's nephew Thibaut Comte de Blois [5], when Amaury´s successio n as Comte d'Evreux was confirmed. The seigneurie de Montfort was elev ated to the status of a county in [1223/26] in favour of Amaury de Mon tfort Duc de Narbonne, Comte de Toulouse, et Seigneur de Montfort, a s compensation for the loss of territories in the south-west of Franc e [6]. The corresponding act has not survived, but Amaury is describe d as "Amalricus... comes Montisfortis et Leycestrie" in a charter fo r Notre-Dame des Vaux de Cernay dated May 1226 [7]. The county of Mont fort was inherited by Amaury´s grand-daughter who married Robert [IV ] Comte de Dreux, who granted it to their daughter Yolande wife of Art hur II Duke of Brittany. [GUILLAUME [de Hainaut], son of --- . Orderi c Vitalis names "Guillelmi Hanoensis" as father of "Amalrici seniori s de Monte-Forti", when recording a visit by Henri I King of France t o Fécamp on the advice of Amaury, dated to [1032] [8]. The accuracy o f the information is uncertain, although presumably it cannot be dismi ssed entirely. Dion suggests that he was a cousin of Reginar [IV] Comt e de Hainaut [9]. No other trace of such a person has yet been found. ] [1] Dion, A. de ‘Le Château de Montfort’, ''Mémoires et Docum ents publiés par la Société Archéologique de Rambouillet'', Tom e I (Rambouillet, 1873), p. 123.
