He points out that there was never a pagus o f this name and also that the county does not correspond geographicall y with any of the local ecclesiastical jurisdictional entities. It i s therefore difficult to define precisely the boundaries of the mediev al county of Clermont. It appears that Clermont became a county unoffi cially when Renaud Seigneur de Clermont assumed the title count on hi s marriage to Adelais Ctss de Vermandois in 1103 and that the elevatio n in status was generally recognised. On the death in 1218 of Thibau t VI Comte de Blois, son of Catherine Ctss de Clermont, the county o f Clermont [en-Beauvaisis] was sold to the French crown [2]. RENAUD [ I] (-before 1047).
