The ''Annales Hanoniæ'' name "Raginerus" as son of "secundi R agineri" [1]. The ''Gesta Episcorum Cameracensium'' records that "Rain erus atque Lantbertus, filii… Raineri", who had been banished by "ar chiepiscopus Bruno", returned to their father's lands after the deat h of Emperor Otto I and besieged "super Hagnam fluvium castrum Bussud" , but that Emperor Otto II ordered their exile again [2]. The ''Annale s Leodienses, Floressienses et Marchianenses'' record that "Ragineru s et Lantbertus" (sons of Reginar [III] Comte de Hainaut) returned fro m exile in 973 and killed "Guarnero et Rainaldo", who occupied their f ather's county, "apud Perronam" and besieged "super Hagnam fluvium cas tello Buxude" [3]. Thietmar records that "Lantbertus, Reinherii filius … cum fratre… Reingerio" killed "Wirinharium et eius germanum Rein zonem" [4]. Sigebert's ''Chronica'' records that in 977 "filii Raginer i" were "in terra partum suorum relocati" [5], which presumably marke d the beginning of their rehabilitation. Archbishop Egbert donated pro perty "de beneficio Luthardi comitis… mortuo sine herede" to St Pau l at Trier by charter dated 981, subscribed by "…Regeneri rerum S Ma rie advocatis…" [6], although it is not known whether this is the sa me Reginar. A letter of Gerbert dated to [985] names "comes Reinharius " [7]. It is not clear from the context whether this refers to Reginar , son of Gozelon, or Reginar [IV] Comte de Hainaut. However, a later l etter names "Hainao Reniero" [8] which suggests that the latter is cor rect. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that "come s Raginerus" captured "Montem castri" from "comiti Godefrido" in 998 [ 9], from which time REGINAR [IV] can properly be described as Comte d e Hainaut, Comte de Mons. The ''Miracula S. Gisleni'' date one of th e events recorded to "tempore Arnulfi et Raineri comitum… Hainacensi um" [10], which suggests that Arnoul continued to enjoy some jurisdict ional rights in the county of Hainaut even after the restoration of Co mte Reginar [IV]. As shown below in Chapter 2, it is assumed that thi s was in the march of Valenciennes. "Raginero comite… et Hathuidis c oniunx eius" donated property at Gion to Gembloux by charter dated t o [1013] [11].
