http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORTHERN%20FRANCE.htm [EBLES (-11 Ma y 1033). The ''Genealogiciæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis'' names "Lebaldu s de Malla et… Iveta comitissa de Retest" as brother and sister of " Ebalus de Roceio" [1]. Comte de Roucy 997. The Chronicle of Alberic d e Trois-Fontaines records the succession in 1023 as archbishop of Reim s of "Ebalus qui fuit comes de Roseio" [2]. Archbishop of Reims 1021 . Moranvillé casts doubt on the co-identity of Ebles Comte de Roucy w ith Ebles Archbishop of Reims [3]. He deems significant that Alberic u ses “Roseio” in the passage cited above, whereas in all other pass ages in which he refers to the Roucy family he uses “Roceio”. He a lso cites two sources which report the appointment of the new archbish op but make no reference to his reported Roucy origin. Firstly, a lett er of Fulbert Bishop of Chartres addressed to Guy Bishop of Soissons d ated 1021 [4], and secondly Hariulf´s Chronicle of Saint-Riquier [5] . Both these sources refer only briefly to the archbishop, without an y description of his background, so the absence of any reference in th em to his antecedents would not be surprising. As for the difference i n spelling Roseio/Roceio, this could be explained by a simple mistak e or transcription error. In any case, no reference has been found t o any “comte de Roussy/Rousy”, as opposed to Roucy, at that time . It is correct that there are numerous examples of information in Alb eric which is disproved by other primary sources. However, they are fa r outnumbered by cases in which his information is corroborated, and a re insufficient to conclude that Alberic´s statements which are uncor roborated should be dismissed unless there are strong indications tha t he is incorrect.] The ''Annales Mosomagenses'' record the death in 1 033 of “Oebalus Remorum archiepiscopus” [6]. The necrology of Reim s records the death “V Id Mai” of “dominus Ebalus archiepiscopus ” and his donation of “ecclesiam de Betignivilla” [7]. [1] ''Ge nealogiæ Fuscniacenses'' 3, MGH SS XIII, p. 252.
