The ''Genealogia Fundatoris'' of Coventry Monast ery names “Algarus tertius” as son of “Leofricus tertius” [1] . Florence of Worcester records that he was created Earl of the East A ngles in 1053, in succession to Harold Godwinson who had succeeded hi s father as Earl of Wessex [2]. Florence of Worcester also records tha t Ælfgar was banished in 1055 by King Edward "without any just caus e of offence" [3]. He went to Ireland, then to Wales where he allied h imself with Gruffydd ap Llywellyn King of Gwynedd and Powys, and invad ed England, sacking Hereford in Oct 1055 [4]. He was reinstated in 105 6 when Gruffydd accepted Edward's overlordship. Florence of Worceste r records that Ælfgar was appointed to succeed his father in 1057 a s Earl of Mercia [5], the earldom of the East Angles passing to Gyrt h Godwinsson. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 1057 he was ba nished again [6], but Florence of Worcester states that he forced hi s restoration in 1058 with the help of Gruffydd and a Norwegian flee t [7]. His death removed from the scene the only potential challenge r to Harold Godwinson Earl of Wessex. [1] ''Dugdale Monasticon'' III , Coventry Monastery III, ''Genealogia Fundatoris'', p. 192.
