Orderic Vitalis names him and gives his parentage, specifyin g that he and his brother were born after their father helped their ma ternal grandfather [1]. Orderic Vitalis names "Bernardus, Goisfredi d e Novo-Mercato filius" as a donor of property to the church [2]. The C hronicle of Battle Abbey records that "Bernardus cognomento de Novo Me rcato… uxor Agnes" donated property in Brecknock to Battle abbey [3] . “…Willielmus de Brai, Bernardus de Novomercato” witnessed th e charter dated to [1070] under which William King of England donate d property to Battle abbey [4]. The ''Historia sancti Petri Gloucestri æ'' records the donation of "unam hidam terræ… Bache in parochia d e Coverna" made "tempore Serlonis abbatis" [abbot from 1072 to 1104] m ade by "Bernardus de Novo Mercato" [5]. A later paragraph in the sam e source records that "Bernardus de Novo Mercato" donated "Glasebury |
