http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/LORRAINE.htm The duchy of Lorraine wa s the rump of the early medieval duchy of Upper Lotharingia, centred o n Nancy. The difficulty is pinpointing the date when "Lotharingia" tra nsformed into "Lorraine". This document sets out the family of the duk es from the accession of the Matfriede dynasty in the mid-11th century . However, contemporary sources continue to refer to the duke as "du x Lotharingiæ" until well into the 14th century. The duchy remained w ithin imperial territory, the dukes being suzerains of the emperor/kin g of Germany. However, Lorraine gradually lost status and territory, e specially after the rise of the comtes de Bar to the west of the duchy . Lorraine was even briefly placed under the suzerainty of Bar durin g the early years of the 13th century [1]. Duke Thibaut I became embro iled in the dispute over the succession to the county of Champagne i n between 1216 and 1218, when Friedrich II King of Germany invaded Lor raine and took the duke back to Germany as a prisoner. The gradual ass imilation of Lorraine into the French sphere of influence started wit h the reign of Duke Raoul, who succeeded in 1329 and spent most of hi s reign at the court of Philippe VI King of France. A significant incr ease in the number of marriages into French comital families can als o be observed from the end of the 13th century. However, formal Frenc h acquisition of Lorraine territory did not accelerate until the mid-1 7th century, and the duchy was only finally annexed by the kingdom o f France in 1766 after the death of Stanislas Leszczinski Duke of Lorr aine, who was the father-in-law of King Louis XV. In an earlier passage, the same sourc e names "Odelrico comite et Gerhardo duce" as sons and successors of " Gerhardus comes marchio [et] cum uxore sua Gisela" [3]. Comte de Metz , Comte de Châtenois. Emperor Heinrich III appointed him as GERARD Du ke of Upper Lotharingia after his brother was killed in battle in No v 1048. The dating clause of a charter dated 15 Oct 1062, which record s a judgment of Udo Bishop of Toul, states “regnante Henrico IV Rom . Rege, Duce Gerardo, Ardulpho Tullensi comite...” [4]. "Gerardus
