He and his brothers Raimo nd and Hugues called themselves sons of the "most noble count William " in a late-11th century document [1]. He succeeded in [1087] as Comt e de Mâcon, Seigneur de Varasque. Albert of Aix records that "Reinold o duce Burgundiæ, fratre Stephani, vice ipsius Burgundiam regentis" l eft for Jerusalem, indicating that his brother Etienne was appointed r egent in the county of Burgundy in his place [2]. He himself joined th e Crusade some time after the death of his brother. Albert of Aix reco rds that "Stephanus… dux Burgundiæ…" joined with the Lombard cont ingent on the second wave of the First Crusade, dated to late 1100 fro m the context [3]. He commanded troops with Etienne Comte de Blois; th ey were defeated by the Turks at Marsivam. William of Tyre records th e presence at the second capture of Tortosa in 1102 of "Stephanus come s Burgundiæ" [4]. Albert of Aix records that "Conradus, Arpinus, Step hanus Blesensis itemque Stephanus de Burgundia" were captured at Raml a after being burned in a tower, and that "Stephano itemque Stephano " were beheaded, dated to mid-1102 from the context [5].
