Nikeforos Bryennios name s "maiori natu Isaacio… iunior Ioannes" as the two sons of "Comnen i Manuelis" [Nikephoros Bryennios Liber I, 1, p. 17]. His parentage i s confirmed by the ''Alexeiad'' which describes Emperor Isaakios Komne nos as brother-in-law of Anna Dalassena, an earlier passage naming hi m Ioannes [''Alexeiad'', Book 3, p. 122, and Book 2, p. 73]. ''Patriki os''. Skylitzes records that Emperor Isaakios created "Joannem fratre m et Catacalon Combustum curopalatas" and "fratrem suum magnum domesti cum" after his accession, in 1057 [Skylitzes, col. 370]. His brother a bdicated in his favour 25 Dec 1059, but Ioannes refused the throne [St urdza (1999), p. 271]. He became a monk as IOANNES. The list of obitua ries of Empress Eirene Doukas's family records the death "12 Jul, mon k John father of Emperor" [REB 63 (2005), pp. 41-71]. |
