http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/RUSSIA,%20Rurik.htm The principalit y of Pereyaslavl lay to the east and south-east of the principality o f Kiev and south of the principality of Chernigov. It was the first li ne of defence for Kiev for invasions from the steppe people to the eas t. In the second half of the 11th and early 12th centuries, Pereyaslav l was closely linked to Kiev being ruled either directly by the Gran d Prince of Kiev or his designated successor. Like the branch descend ed from Sviatoslav II Grand Prince of Kiev, this branch of the famil y continued to provide Grand Princes of Kiev until 1240, following th e invasion of the Mongols. VSEVOLOD Iaroslavich, son of IAROSLAV I "M udriy/the Wise" Grand Prince of Kiev & his second wife Ingigerd Olafsd ottir of Sweden (1030-13 Apr 1093, bur Kiev, Church of St Sophia). Th e ''Primary Chronicle'' records the birth of Vsevolod "a fourth son" t o Vladimir in 1030 [1]. Snorre names "Valdemar, Vissivald and Holte th e Bold" as the children of "King Jarisleif" & his wife [2]. In accorda nce with the terms of his father's testament, he succeeded in 1054 a s Prince of Pereyaslavl, the territory including Rostov, the whole Vol ga, Oka and Klazma river basin and the region of Bielooziero [3]. He w as defeated in [1062] by the Kuman [Cumans], in their first attack aga inst Rus. He was forced out of Pereyaslavl and retreated to Kiev [4] . He was appointed to succeed his brother Sviatoslav as Prince of Cher nigov in 1073. He succeeded his brother in 1076 as VSEVOLOD I Grand Pr ince of Kiev, but was deposed in 1077 by his older brother Iziaslav. H is nephew Oleg Sviatoslavich claimed Chernigov after the death of hi s father Sviatoslav, but was expelled by Vsevolod in Apr 1078. Oleg re turned with support from the Kuman [Cumans] to take Chernigov by force , defeating Vsevolod on the river Sozh, east of Pereyaslavl, 25 Aug 10 78 [5]. Prince Vsevolod thereupon sought support from his brother Izia slav, and they defeated Oleg 3 Oct 1078 at Nezhatin Meadow near Cherni gov, where Prince Iziaslav was killed [6]. Vsevolod was restored onc e more as Grand Prince of Kiev in 1078 after Prince Iziaslav's death . The ''Primary Chronicle'' records the death 13 Apr 1093 of Vsevolo d son of Yaroslav and his place of burial [7]. [1] ''Russian Primar y Chronicle'' (1973), 1030, p. 136.
