This is confirmed b y the letter dated 878 from Pope John VIII to "Mactefrido illustri com iti" referring to Engeltrud wife of Boso (who was the daughter of Matf ried [I]) as "proxime vestre" [MGH Epistola VII 111, p. 102, and 129 , p. 114, quoted in Hlawitschka (1969), p. 159], although this wordin g suggests a more remote relationship than father and son. "Hlotharius … imperator augustus" granted property "in pago Lugdunense" to "cuid am vassallo… Immoni", at the request of "Matfredus… comes vel mini sterialis noster", by charter dated 15 Dec 843 [D Lo I 83, p. 204].
