Thietmar names "Ottone germano sui", referring to Gerberga wi fe of Heinrich von Schweinfurt, whose captivity is recorded in the pre ceding paragraph, an earlier paragraph referring to "Heriberti comiti s filio Ottone" which appears to refer to the same Otto [Thietmar 5.3 5 and 5.24 respectively]. An alternative possibility is that Gerberg a was the daughter of Otto Graf von Grabfeld, the solution chosen by ' 'Europäische Stammtafeln'' [ES III 54], but this assumes that the tw o references to "Otto" in Thietmar were to different individuals. It i s also less likely chronologically as it would appear that Otto Graf v on Grabfeld was several decades older than Otto Graf von Hammerstein . Her birth date range is estimated on the basis of her daughter Eilik a having given birth to her first child in [1020].
