The ''Annalista Saxo'' names "duc e Bernhardo, filius eius Bernhardus" when recording his succession t o his father in 1011 as BERNHARD II Herzog in Sachsen [''Annalista Sax o'' 1010]. As "Bernard Duke of Westfalia", he signed the 1013 documen t of Heinrich II King of Germany under which the king renewed his sett lement of a dispute over Gandersheim, listed first among the lay signa tories [D H II 255, p. 293]. The ''Annalista Saxon'' records that he r ebelled against Emperor Heinrich in 1020, captured "Scalkesburh", bu t withdrew and was restored to his properties after the intercession o f the empress [''Annalista Saxo'' 1020]. "Heinricus… Romanorum imper ator augustus" renewed the privileges of Kloster Fulda by undated char ter, placed in the compilation with other charters dated 1020, witness ed by "Godifridi ducis, Berinhardi ducis, Thiederici ducis, Welphoni s comitis, Cunonis comitis, Kunrati comitis, Ottonis comitis, Adilbrah tis comitis, Bobonis comitis, Friderici comitis, Bezilini comitis, Ezo nis comitis palatini" [D H II 427, p. 542], the order of witnesses pre sumably giving some idea of the relative importance of these named nob les at the court of Emperor Heinrich II at the time. Adam of Bremen re cords the death in 1059 of "Bernardus Saxonum dux" [Adami, ''Gesta Ham menburgensis Ecclesiæ Pontificum'' III.42, MGH SS VII, p. 351]. The n ecrology of Lüneburg records the death "29 Jun" of "Bernhardus dux" [ Althoff, G. (ed.) (1983) ''Die Totenbücher von Merseburg, Magdeburg u nd Lüneburg'' (Hannover), Lüneburg]. |
