The ''Fundatio Sancti Pauli'' in Carinthia na mes "Hadwich cometissa Engelberti relicta", and lists (in order) "Enge lbert et Pernhart et Hainrich filii ipsius" as witnesses to the relate d diploma [''Fundatio Monasterii Sancti Pauli in Carinthia'' 8, MGH S S XV.2, p. 1060]. The necrology of Regensburg St Emmeram records the d eath "Kal Jun" of "Hadewich coma" [''Necrologium Monasterii S Emmeramm i Ratisbonensis'', Regensburg Necrologies, p. 301]. The ''Genealogia e x stirpe Sancti Arnulfi'' names "Idam Namucensem… uxorem Angelbert i marchionis et Gertrudem comitissam Flandrensem" as children of "Bern ardum" [''Genealogia ex stirpe Sancti Arnulfi descendentium Mettensis' ' 7, MGH SS XXV, p. 384]. It is not certain to whom "Angelberti marchi onis" refers, but it is possible that it is Engelbert [I] Graf von Spo nheim whose father was Markgraf. If this is correct, she would have be en Hedwig of Saxony, daughter of Bernhard II Duke of Saxony [Billung ] & his wife Eilika von Schweinfurt. Wegener points out that a Saxon o rigin for Hedwig is consistent with the introduction of the names Bern hard and Heinrich into the family of the Grafen von Sponheim [Wegene r (1965/67), p. 265]. However, if Hedwig was the daughter of Duke Bern hard, she must have been born in the range [1020/40]. This seems earl y in light of the known career dates of Hedwig's children. |
