| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/BAVARIAN%20NOBILITY.htm This is the B avarian family often referred to, for convenience, as the "Siegharding er" after the name of their first ancestor which was used repeatedly i n succeeding generations. The senior branch of the family was closel y associated with Ebersberg. The younger branch established themselve s as Grafen im Chiemgau, later Grafen von Tengling, Burghausen und Sch ala, and Peilstein. The early history of the Grafen von Ebersberg is r ecorded in the ''Chronico Eberspergensi'' [''Chronico Eberspergensi Po steriore'', MGH SS XXV, pp. 867-72], a collection of manuscripts colla ted at Ebersberg monastery in the mid-13th century but which probabl y dates from much earlier judging from the detail of the information w hich it contains. The last event recorded probably dates to the 1030s . This means that this is one of the few German families for which an y details have survived for the crucial 10th/11th century period for w hich information is usually so sparse. The ''Chronico'' specifies tha t the Grafen von Ebersberg were "de genere" of Karloman King of the Ea st Franks [Carolingian]. This relationship with the later Carolingian s appears corroborated by Graf Sieghard (d. 906) being described as "p ropinquo nostro" by Emperor Arnulf in the charter under which the empe ror granted him a chapel at Ebersberg. This document also represents t he first proven connection between the family and the location of Eber sberg. The charter dated 21 Jul 946 under which "Otto… rex" transfer red property "in pago Chiemihgovue in comitatu Sigihardi" to "comiti n ostro Eberhart… talem proprietatem qualem antecessor noster… Arnol fus rex avo illius Sigihardo comiti" also provides a cryptic referenc e to the Carolingian relationship, although it is not possible to se e how "avus" could be correct [D O I 78, p. 157]. The first recorded p ossessor of the castle of Ebersberg was Graf Ratold (d. 919), elder gr andson of the first known Graf Sieghard, who is also recorded as havin g borne the title "Markgraf". This appears to have been an isolated ex ample of the grant of this title to members of the family as none of h is descendants is recorded as Markgraf. SIEGHARD [I], son of --- (- 8 61 or after). A charter dated 5 Jan 848 records an exchange of propert y "in pago Chochinguue et in Mulehgouue" between Hatto Abbot of Fuld a and "Sigehardus comes", subscribed by "Gerharti comitis, Sigifridi c omitis" [''Württembergisches Urkundenbuch'' I, 115, p. 134]. Ludwig I I "der Deutsche" King of the East Franks donated property which "come s Sigihardus comes in villa Heitungesfelden in beneficium nobis habuit " to Kloster Fulda by charter dated 12 Feb [849?] [D LD 53, p. 71]. Th e geographical distance of Fulda from Kraichgau suggests that these tw o documents may not refer to the same person as the other diplomas cit ed below. Graf im Kraichgau 858: King Ludwig II "der Deutsche" grante d property "in pago Lobodengouue in comitatu Werinherii in villa… Wa lestat" to Tuto in exchange for property "in comitatu Sighardi in pago … Creichgouue in villa Vhratesheim" by charter dated 7 Dec 858 [D L D 94, p. 135]. An agreement between Charles II "le Chauve" King of th e West Franks and his brother King Ludwig II dated Jun 860 names "nobi lis ac fidelibus laicis… Chuonradus, Evrardus, Adalardus, Arnustus , Warnarius, Liutfridus, Hruodolfus, Erkingarius, Gislebertus, Ratbodu s, Arnulfus, Hugo, item Chuonradus, Liutharius, Berengarius, Matfridus , Boso, Sigeri, Hartmannus, Liuthardus, Richuinus, Wigricus, Hunfridus , Bernoldus, Hatto, Adalbertus, Burchardus, Christianus, Leutulfus, He ssi, Herimannus, item Hruodulfus, Sigehardus" [''Adnuntatio domni Karo li'', MGH LL 1, p. 469]. m [---, sister of LIUTSWINDIS, daughter of -- -. This possible marriage is shown to explain why Sieghard's son, Sieg hard, is referred to consistently in primary sources as consanguineu s of Emperor Arnulf I, on the basis that the most likely connection i s through the family of the emperor's mother Liutswindis.] Graf Siegha rd & his wife had [one] child. |
