| Nota | '''From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia''' Countess Palatine of Loth aringia Issue Liudolf of Lotharingia Otto II, Duke of Swabia Herma nn II, Archbishop of Cologne Theophanu, Abbess of Essen Richeza, Que en of Poland Adelheid, Abbess of Nijvel Heylwig, Abbess of Neuss Ma thilde, Abbess of Dietkirchen and Villich Sophie, Abbess of St. Mari a Ida, Abbess of Cologne House Ottonian Dynasty Father Otto II, Hol y Roman Emperor Mother Theophanu Born Summer 979 Died November 102 5 Brauweiler Abbey Religion Roman Catholic Matilda of Germany or Ma tilde of Saxony (Summer 979-November 1025 Echtz[1]) Was the third daug hter of Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor and his wife Empress Theophanu. S hortly after her birth, Matilda was sent to Essen Abbey, where her old er cousin Matilde was Abbess, Matilda was educated here. It was presum ed that Matilda would stay in the Abbey and become an Abbess like her e older sisters Adelheid I, Abbess of Quedlinburg and Sophia I, Abbes s of Gandersheim. However, Matilda lived a different life than her tw o sisters, she was to marry Ezzo, Count Palatine of Lotharingia. Accor ding to the Historian Thietmar of Merseburg Matilda's brother Otto III , Holy Roman Emperor did not like the idea of the marriage at first. T he family gave the couple large gifts to secure the adequate standar d of living. The Empress Theophanu had consented to the marriage. Ezz o then took Matilda out of the Abbey where she had lived. However, Abb ess Mathilde had vainly refused to surrender the girl. Later romanti c embellishments even claimed Ezzo had previously been secretly in lov e with the young Matilda. Ezzo took Matilda from the Abbey to marry he r. Matilda's mother Theophanu had always agreed to the wedding but Ma tilda's cousin and teacher Abbess Matilde did not agree to the marriag e. Without the consent of Matilda's mother the marriage would not happ en with certainty, it is even likely that this marriage was to ensur e the power of Otto III. The family had extensive estates in the Lowe r Rhine and Mosel. Ezzo's mother came from the House of Swabia and s o Ezzo laid claims to these lands. Matilda received them out of Ottoni an possessions and gave them to her husband. Ezzo and Matilda had mar ried for love and their marriage was very happy. In any case, it was e xtremely fruitful, with ten children: Liudolf (c. 1000–10 April 103 1), Count of Zütphen. Otto I (died 1047), Count Palatine of Lotharin gia and later Duke of Swabia as Otto II. Hermann II (995–1056), Arc hbishop of Cologne. Theophanu (died 1056), Abbess of Essen and Gerres heim. Richeza of Lotharingia (died 21 March 1063), Queen of Poland, m arried King Mieszko II of Poland. Adelheid (died c. 1030), Abbess o f Nijvel (Nivelles). Heylwig, Abbess of Neuss. Mathilde, Abbess of D ietkirchen and Villich. Sophie, Abbess of St. Maria, Mainz. Ida (die d 1060), Abbess of Cologne and Gandersheim Abbey (founded in 852 by he r ancestor Liudolf, Duke of Saxony). Matilda apparently died unexpect edly during a visit to Ezzo's brother Hermann, while Ezzo was held i n Aachen, at a meeting of the nobility of Lorraine. Matilda was burie d at Brauweiler Abbey.[2] Matilda was the mother of the famous Richez a of Lotharingia who became Queen of Poland and was later beatified .
