| Nota | son of --- ([850/60]-killed in battle near Pressburg 4 Jul 907). His b irth date is estimated from the estimated date of his [supposed] firs t marriage. The ''Annales Fuldenses'' record that "Engildieo marchensi s Baioariorum" was deprived of his honours in 895, and in his place th at "Liutboldus nepos regis" was appointed [''Annales Fuldensium Pars Q uinta, auctore Quodam Bawaro'' 895, MGH SS I, p. 410]. The ''Annales F uldenses'' record disputes between "duos fratres gentis Marahensium, M oymirum ac Zuentibaldum" in 898, which prompted Emperor Arnulf to sen d "marchiones suos, Liutboldum et Arbonum comitem" to Moravia to prote ct the Bavarians [''Annales Fuldensium Pars Quinta, auctore Quodam Baw aro'' 898, MGH SS I, p. 413]. "Arnolfus imperator augustus" gave prope rty in "Charentariche in comitatu ipsius consanguinei nostri [Liutbald i]…Gurca…et…in Gurcatala et in alia loco qui dicitur Zulszah" t o "viro progenie bonæ nobilitatis exorto Zuentibolch…Liutbaldi…pr opinqui ac illustris nostri marchionis vassallo" at the request of "Ir ingi et Isangrimi…comitum nostrorum" by charter dated 31 Aug 898 [ D Arn 162, p. 245]. "Arnolfus imperator augustus" granted to "viro pro genie bonæ nobilitatis Zuentibolch…Liutbaldi…propinqui ac illustr is nostri marchionis vassallo" property "in Charentariche in comitat u ipsius consanguinei nostri" by charter dated 19 Jan 901 on the propo sal of "Liutbaldi…comitis et…propinqui nostri" [D Arn 162, p. 245] . The ''Annales Ducum Bavariæ'' record that "Arnulfus [rex]" left th e duchy of Bavaria to "Leupoldo cuidam nobili" in 899 [''Annales Ducu m Bavariæ'' 899, MGH SS XVII, p. 366]. "Ludovuicus…rex" donated pro perty to Kloster St Florian by charter dated 19 Jan 901 on the proposa l of "Liutbaldi…comitis et…propinqui nostri" [D LK 9, p. 108]. I t is possible that Luitpold ruled as Duke of Bohemia in 903, as show n by the charter dated 24 Jun 903 under which "Hludowicus…rex" confi rmed privileges to Kloster St Gallen in which among "fidelium nostrum " was listed "Liutpold dux Boemanorum" [D LK 20, p. 125], although i t is possible that "Boemanorum" was a copyist's error for "Baiorarioru m" as this appears to be the only reference to Luitpold ruling in Bohe mia. "Hludowicus…rex" granted property to the church of Freising b y charter dated 30 Nov 903 in which among "fidelium nostrum" was liste d "Liutboldi illustris comitis et cari propinqui nostri" [D LK 28, p . 138]. "Hludowicus…rex" granted property "in valle…Liupinatal i n comitatu eiusdem Otacherii" to "Otacharii…comitis nostri filio Arp o" after consulting "fidelium nostrorum Liutpoldi, Arponis, Iringi, Cu mpoldi et Paponis comitum" by charter dated 10 Mar 904 [D LK 31, p. 14 3]. "Hludowicus…rex" confirmed an exchange of properties between Klo ster Fulda and Kloster Echternach after consulting "fidelium nostroru m comitum vero Kebeharti, Liutpoldi, Burcharti, Eginonis, Liutfredi, I ringi et Cunpoldi" by charter dated 19 Mar 907 [D LK 53, p. 178]. Regi no records that "Liutbaldus dux occisus est" in 907 fighting the Hunga rians [''Continuator Reginonis Trevirensis'' 907, MGH SS I, p. 614]. [ m firstly ([875/85] or before) ---. There is no direct indication o f a first marriage of Duke Liutpold. However, considering the likel y birth date of his eldest son Arnulf, the mother of the latter must h ave been born in [860/70]. If this is correct, a marriage in 913 betw een the widow of Duke Luitpold, then beyond child-bearing age, and Kon rad I King of Germany would seem surprising.] |
