| Nota | '''From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia''' Otto dux, ''Chronica Sanc ti Pantaleonis'', Cologne, about 1237 Otto (died 4 November 1004), ca lled Otto of Worms, was Duke of Carinthia and Margrave of Verona fro m 978 to 985 and again from 1002 until his death. A scion of the Sali an dynasty from Rhenish Franconia, Otto was the only son of Count Conr ad the Red, Duke of Lotharingia from 944, and Liutgarde, daughter of E mperor Otto I and Edith. He is first documented as a count in the Nahe gau about 956, he also held the Speyergau and Wormsgau, as well as sev eral other counties in the area. In 978 Emperor Otto II appointed Cou nt Otto Carinthian duke, after his Luitpolding predecessor Henry I o f Carinthia had unsuccessfully rebelled against the Imperial authorit y during the War of the Three Henries and was deposed. In 985 however , Emperor Otto's widow Theophanu, in order to gain support for the suc cession of her minor son Otto III, restored Carinthia to the Luitpoldi ngs, and Otto again lost his duchy. He could at least retain the duca l title as "Duke of Worms", received the Kaiserpfalz of Lautern and se ized large estates of Wissembourg (Weißenburg) Abbey in compensation . Upon the death of Duke Henry II of Bavaria in 995, Otto at first re ceived the March of Verona back, while Carinthia passed to Henry's so n Duke Henry III of Bavaria. When Emperor Otto III had died in 1002, O tto of Worms and Henry III of Bavaria were candidates for the electio n as King of the Romans; Otto withdrew and received the Duchy of Carin thia from the newly elected king Henry (then Henry II of Germany) in r eturn. Nevertheless he was forced to cede his Rhenish possessions to h is long-time rival Bishop Burchard of Worms. Otto died two years late r, he was succeeded as Carinthian duke by his son, Conrad. Otto marri ed Judith (died 991), probably a granddaughter of Duke Arnulf the Ba d of Bavaria. They had the following known children: Henry of Speye r (died before 1000), Count in the Wormsgau Brun (died 999), ruled a s Pope Gregory V from 996 Conrad I, Duke of Carinthia (1004-1011) Wi lliam, Bishop of Strasbourg (1028-1047) http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLa nds/FRANCONIA.htm OTTO, son of KONRAD Duke [of Lotharingia] & his wif e Liutgard of Saxony (-4 Nov 1004, bur [Bruchsal]). The Chronicle of A lberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Ottonem" as son of "duci Wormatie Con rado", specifying that he was father of "Cono dux et Henricus pater im peratoris Conradi" [''Chronica Albrici Monachi Trium Fontium'' 1024, M GH SS XXIII, p. 782]. Graf im Nahegau 956: "Otto…rex" granted proper ty "in pago Nahgouue in forasto…Vuasago…in comitatu Ottonis fili i Cuonradi ducis" to Worms St Peter by charter dated 8 Mar 956 [ D O I 178, p. 259]. He was installed as OTTO Duke of Carinthia by Ott o II King of Germany in 978 after the trial of Heinrich Duke of Carint hia who had been implicated in the rebellion of Heinrich II "der Zänk er" Duke of Bavaria [Thietmar, p. 132, footnote 22]. Duke Otto was dep rived of Carinthia in 985 when it was returned to Duke Heinrich I [Liu tpoldinger], but allowed to retain the ducal title and granted lands a round Worms and Frankfurt [Reuter (1991), p. 185]. He was restored a s Duke of Carinthia from 995 to 1002. Presumably he is the "Duke Otto " who is listed first among those presiding over a court hearing in th e presence of Emperor Otto III at Pavia 14 Oct 1001 [D O III 411, p. 8 44]. According to Thietmar, he was proposed as candidate for the imper ial throne in 1002 but declined the offer [Thietmar 5.25, p. 222]. Thi etmar names "Duke Otto of Carinthia and Verona" among those sent by He inrich II King of Germany to Lombardy after his election to quell unre st [Thietmar 5.24, p. 222]. Wipo names "Ottone duce Francorum" when re cording the names of his sons [Wiponis, ''Vita Chuonradi II Imperatori s'' 2, MGH SS XI, p. 258]. The necrology of Fulda records the death "1 003 II Non Nov" of "Otto dux" [''Annales Necrologici Fuldenses'', MG H SS XIII, p. 123]. |
