He declined the succession t o the throne of France on the death of his father in 923, when his bro ther-in-law Raoul Duke of Burgundy was elected king. The position of power acquired by Hugues is confirme d by the title dux francorum/Duc des Francs used in charters dated 2 5 Jul 936 and 25 Dec 936 [7], and the king's references to him as “n otre second dans tous nos royaumes”. Disputes between Hugues and th e king quickly followed. On the death of King Louis IV in 954, Hugue s was confirmed as Duc des Francs. He was granted lordship over Burgun dy and Aquitaine [8]. He only succeeded in subjugating the former, suc ceeding Duke Giselbert as Duke of Burgundy in Apr 956. The ''Histori a Francorum Senonensis'' records the death "XVI Kal Iul apud Drodinga m villam" of "Hugo Magnus dux Francorum" and his burial "in basilica b eati Dyonisii martiris Parisius" [9]. The necrology of Chartres cathed ral records the death "XVI Kal Jul" of "Hugo dux Francorum" [10]. Th e ''Obituaire de Notre-Dame de Paris'' records the death "XV Kal Jul " of "Hugo dux Francorum" [11]. The necrology of Auxerre cathedral rec ords the death 16 Jun of "Hugo comes" [12].
