http://www.worldlingo.com/ma/enwiki/en/Gisulf_I_of_Friuli Gisulf I wa s probably the first duke of Friuli (then Forum Julii), a nephew of Al boin, first king of the Lombards in Italy. Alboin appointed him duke a round 569 after the Lombard conquest of the region, though some schola rs believe he appointed Gisulf's father, his brother, Grasulf, duke . Before this, Gisulf had been his uncle's marpahis or "master of th e horse," sometimes considered a shield-bearer. He was, according to P aul the Deacon, "a man suitable in every way."[1] He asked Alboin fo r permission to chose which faras or clans he would lead rule over i n Friuli and this request was granted. He thus chose which families wo uld settle permanently in Friuli and he "acquired the honour of a lead er (ducior)."[2] As well, Alboin granted him a great herd of mares, pe rhaps in recognition of his former service. He reigned during the Rul e of the Dukes from 575 to 585. He was succeeded by his son Gisulf II . Notes ^ Paul, bk 2, ch IX [1]. ^ Ibid. Sources Paul the Deacon . Historia Langobardorum.
