| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SAXONY.htm The wife of Theoderich i s named "Reinhildam, Danorum Fresonumque germine procreatam" in the '' Vita Mathildis Reginæ'' [''Vita Mathildis Reginæ'' 2, MGH SS IV, p . 285]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln [ES II 104], she was Rei nhild, daughter of Gotfrid the Dane & his wife Gisela [Carolingian], w hich is presumably a guess based on this description in the ''Vita Mat hildis''. However, the chronology is not ideal. Regino records the mar riage in 882 of "Gisla filia Hlotharii" and "rex Godofridus Nordmannor um" [''Reginonis Chronicon'' 882, MGH SS I, p. 593]. If this couple' s daughter was the mother of Queen Mathilde, the latter's estimated bi rth date (see below) would need to be pushed forward by several years , which makes the chronology for her known descendants tight. A bette r fit may be Reginlind, [sister of Bovo Bishop of Chalons-sur-Marne, d aughter of ---]. The known sister of Bishop Bovo was Frederuna, wife o f Charles III "le Simple" King of the Franks. The hypothesis that ther e was another sister married to Theoderic would explain (1) the name F rederuna being transmitted to Regenhild's daughter, and (2) Berenger B ishop of Cambrai, recorded elsewhere as nepos of Queen Frederuna, bein g described as "…Ottonis imperatoris proxime consanguineus" in the ' 'Gesta Episcoporum Cameracensium'' [''Gesta Episcoporum Cameracensium' ' I,80 , MGH SS VII, p. 431]. If this is correct, the reference to Reg inlind being "Danorum Fresonumque germine procreatam" has not been exp lained. A list of names in the ''Libri Confraternitatum Sancti Galli' ' sets out (in order) "Thieterich, Reginhilt, *, Oto, Amalrat, Perecth eid, Friderun, Pia", immediately after a list of family members of Hei nrich I King of Germany and his wife, which no doubt refers to the lat ter's parents and sisters, "Oto" being the only person not so far iden tified [Piper, P. (ed.) (Berlin) ''Libri confraternitatum Sancti Galli , Augiensis, Fabariensis'' (Berlin), p. 84]. The list is undated but w as presumably written during the period [929/36] as King Heinrich's so n-in-law Duke Giselbert is included (married in [928/29]) but not hi s son-in-law Hugues Duc des Francs (married in 937). The necrology o f Merseburg records the death "11 May" of "Reinhild mater regine Mahti ldis" [Althoff, G. (ed.) (1983) ''Die Totenbücher von Merseburg, Magd eburg und Lüneburg'' (Hannover), Merseburg]. |
