The ''Annalista Saxo'' (apparently incorrectly) rec ords "Herimannum ducem" as son of "Udonis ducis, qui aput Calabriam cu m multis occubuit, quando imperator Otto secundus contra Sarracenos pu gnavit" [''Annalista Saxo'' 1002]. The confusion may be due to Thietma r describing Duke Hermann as "matris meæ avunculi filius" [Thietmar 5 .22], without specifying which "avunculus" to whom this refers. He wa s installed in 997 as HERMANN II Duke of Swabia. A majority of south-w estern magnates supported Duke Hermann's candidacy for the imperial th rone in 1002 after the death of Emperor Otto III, but acknowledged th e accession of Heinrich Duke of Bavaria as king of Germany in Oct 100 2 [Reuter (1991), pp. 186-7]. The necrology of Fulda records the deat h "1003 IV Non Mai" of "Herman dux" [''Annales Necrologici Fuldenses'' , MGH SS XIII, p. 123]. m ([986]) as her second husband, GERBERGA of B urgundy, widow of HERMANN Graf von Werl, daughter of CONRAD I "le Paci fique" King of Burgundy [Welf] & his second wife Mathilde de France [C arolingian] (-7 Jul 1018). Herimannus names "filiam Counradi regis Bur gundiæ, Gerbirgam" as wife of "Herimannus dux" [''Herimanni Augiensi s Chronicon'' 998, MHG SS V, p. 1]. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois- Fontaines names "Rodulfum II et sororem suam Gepam matrem imperatrici s Gisile" as children of "Conradus rex Burgundie" and his wife Mathild e [''Chronica Albrici Monachi Trium Fontium'' 986, MGH SS XXIII, p. 77 3]. Wipo names "Herimannus dux Alamanniæ [et] Kerbirga filia Chuonrad i regis de Burgundia" as the parents of "regis coniunx Gisela" [Wiponi s, ''Vita Chuonradi II Imperatoris'' 4, MGH SS XI, p. 261]. "Otto…Ro manorum imperator augustus" donated property "in villa Stohchusen in p ago Locdorp ac comitatu Herimanni comitis" to Kloster Meschede by char ter dated 29 Sep 997 by request of "Gerbirge comitisse" [D O III 254 , p. 670]. The necrology of Marchtalen records the death "Non Jul" o f "Gerbirc ducissa" [''Fragmenta Necrologii Marchtalensis'', Konstan z Necrologies, p. 201]. No direct record of her first marriage has s o far been identified. However, "Otto tercius…Romanorum imperator au gustus" granted privileges to Kloster Oedingen founded by "matrona Ger berga…in comitatu Herimanni eius filii" to the monks of the Marienka pelle at Aachen by charter dated 18 May 1000 [D O III 363, p. 792], an d Thietmar names "Count Hermann son of Gerberga" when recording his di spute with Dietrich Bishop of Münster in 1016 [Thietmar 7.49, p. 342] . These two references relate to Hermann [II] Graf von Werl. In additi on, "Rodulfus et Bernhardus nati in…Werla" are named as brothers o f Empress Gisela in the ''Annalista Saxo'', although not specifying th at they were her uterine brothers [''Annalista Saxo'' 1026]. |
