His parentage is suggested by Nikephoros Bryennios who r ecords that "uxor Andronici" was "genus a Samuele… Bulgarorum rege , e cuius filio Troianne nata ipsa erat" [Meineke, A. (ed.) (1836) ''I oannes Cinnamus, Nicephorus Bryennius, Corpus Scriptorum Historiæ Byz antinæ'' (Bonn) ("Nikephoros Bryennios") Liber III, 6, p. 106]. The p rimary source which confirms that he was the son of Tsar Ivan Vladisla v, not Samuil, has not yet been identified. The list of obits of Empre ss Eirene Dukas's family records the death "19 May, Theodore grandfath er of the Empress" [REB 63 (2005), pp. 41-71]. As the list also name s the empress's paternal grandfather, this must be her maternal grandf ather, indicating that he had adoped the Greek name THEODOROS. |
