| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/FRANKISH%20NOBILITY.htm [Three] sibli ngs, parents not known. The poem by Gosbert, addressed to the brothe r "Guillelmum Blesensium comitem", which refers to him as "Francigenu m primo proavis abavisque peralto" [1] suggests that their ancestry wa s illustrious. Levillain identifies Eudes with Odo, son of [Adrianus [ Udalrichinger] & his wife Waldrada ---] [2]. This seems unlikely to b e correct as the name Guillaume/Wilhelm (brother of Eudes Comte d´Orl éans) does not appear at all in the Udalrichinger family, although i t is possible that the name could have been introduced from their moth er´s family. A possible clue about the origins of Eudes's mother is p rovided by the ''Vita Hludowici Imperatoris'' which records the blindi ng of "Heribertus Bernhardi frater" and his exile with "Hodo consobrin us illius" [3]. The previous passage in the ''Vita'' records the confi scation of Orléans from Eudes Comte d'Orléans. It is possible that h e was the same person as "Hodo", although if this is correct the preci se nature of the relationship between him and Héribert has not been e stablished. Assuming that Héribert was the son of Guillaume de Toulou se and his first wife Cunigundis (about which there is some doubt, a s explained elsewhere in this document), and assuming also that "conso brinus" is used in the text in its strict sense, Cunegundis and the mo ther of Eudes Comte d'Orléans would have been sisters. EUDES ([770/8 0]-killed in battle [Touraine] Jun 834). His birth date is estimated o n the assumption that he was already mature when named for the first t ime in 810/11, but bearing in mind his active participation in the 83 4 battle in which he was killed. The ''Annales Fuldenses'' record tha t "Odo legatus imperatoris… orientalium Saxonum præsidium" was capt ured by "Wilzis" in 810 [4]. Einhard's ''Annales'' record "Uodo comes " as one of the signatories of peace with the Vikings in 811 [5]. He b ecame Comte d'Orléans after the territory was forfeited by Matfried [ 6]: the ''Miracula Sancti Bernardi'' records that "Matfrido, comite qu ondam Aurelianensi" was deprived of his honours "culpam inertiæ" an d "Odo" appointed in his place [7], presumably dated to [828]. From th at time, Eudes and his brother Guillaume were the most powerful suppor ters of Emperor Louis "le Pieux" against his son Lothaire, whose rebel lion was supported by Matfried. The ''Vita Hludowici Imperatoris'' rec ords that "Aurelianensem urbem" was taken from "Hodone" and restored t o "Mathfrido" [in 830] [8]. The ''Annales Bertiniani'' record that "Od o et Willelmus frater eius" were among those killed fighting "Lantbert um et Matfridem" in 834 [9]. Merlet suggests that the battle took plac e in Touraine [10]. The ''Annales Xantenses'' record that "Uodo come s et Theodo abbas" were killed in 834 [11]. The ''Annales Fuldenses' ' record the rebellion of "Mahtfredo et Lantberto" in 834 and the batt le in which "Udo comes Aurelianensium et Theodo abbas sancti Martini T uronensis" were killed [12]. The ''Chronicle'' of Adémar de Chabanne s records that "Odo Aurelianorum comes" was killed fighting "Lambert o Nannetensi comite" [13]. The ''Miracula Sancti Bernardi'' names "Odo nem fratremque illius Guillelmum, comitem Blesensium, Teutonem deniqu e abbatem Sancti Martini, Guidonem comitem Cenomanensem" among those k illed in battle against Lambert Comte de Nantes [14]. The ''Chronica R ainaldi'' records that "Odo comes Aurelianensium, Willelmus frater eiu s comes Blesensium, Guido comes Cenomanensium" died in battle fightin g "Lambertum" in 835 [15]. It is more likely that this battle took pla ce in 834, assuming that it is correct that Count Lantbert was establi shed in Italy later that year. [m firstly ---. The charter quoted belo w, which records the confirmation of a donation to Tours Saint-Marti n made by Comte Eudes and his son Guillaume, suggests that Guillaume m ust have been considerably older than his sister Ermentrudis (whose bi rth is estimated to [830]). If this is correct, it is possible that Gu illaume was born from an earlier marriage of his father. The possibili ty of such an earlier marriage is also indicated by Eudes´s estimate d birth date as shown above.] m [secondly] ENGELTRUDIS.
