| Nota | '''From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia''' Osburh or Osburga (bor n c 810 died March 853)[citation needed] was the first wife of King Æ thelwulf of Wessex and mother of Alfred the Great. Alfred's biographer , Asser, described her as "a most religious woman, noble in characte r and noble by birth".[1] Osburh's existence is known only from Asser 's Life of King Alfred. She is not named as witness to any charters, n or is her death reported in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. It is presumed , but nowhere recorded, that she was also the mother of Alfred's olde r brothers Æthelstan, Æthelbald, Æthelberht, Æthelred, and of hi s sister Æthelswith, wife of King Burgred of Mercia. Osburh presumabl y died before 856 when her husband married the Carolingian princess Ju dith.
