http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORMAN%20NOBILITY.htm [PERNEL [Petron ille] (-1 Apr 1212). Pernel is named as great-granddaughter of Hugue s de Grantmesnil in the [1190/1204] charter of her son Robert FitzPern el to the abbey of St Evroul [1]. Her father is named Hugh de Grantmes nil in an account of the foundation of Leicester Abbey, but the ''Comp lete Peerage'' casts doubt on the accuracy of this as mentioned abov e [2]. Robert de Torigny records that her husband gained the Norman ho nour of Grantmesnil through his marriage [3], which suggests that Pern el, as heiress, was descended from the oldest son of Hugues de Grantme snil senior. It is possible that she was the daughter of Agnes, daught er of Robert de Grantmesnil. Considering that Orderic Vitalis does no t name Hugues (supposed brother of Agnes) although he is so thorough i n naming other members of this family, this is the most likely possibi lity. "Robertus filius comitis Legrece" donated property to Notre-Dam e de la Trappe for the soul of "uxoris mee Petronille" by charter date d [1153/67] [4]. "Petronilla comitissa Leircestrie" confirmed the exch ange of land with Nuneaton priory made by "Robertus comes Leircestri e filius meus", who gave land in Belgrave in return for land in Dadlin gton which had been donated by "sponsus meus Robertus comes… cum fil ia mea pie memorie Hawis", by charter dated to after 1189 [5]. The Tes ta de Nevill lists knights who held land from the king in Hertfordshir e, dated to [1204/12]: "comitissa de Leicestria" held "Wares" [6]. Th e necrology of Lyre monastery records the death "1 Apr" of "Petronill a comitissa Leicestriæ" [7]. The necrology of the monastery of Ouch e records the death "1 Apr" of "Petronilla comitissa Leycestriæ" [8] . [1] CP VII 532, footnote g. [2] CP VII 532, footnote h.
