The ''Annales E lnonenses Minores'' record that "Arnulfus, filius Balduini ex Matilde " [1] succeeded his grandfather in 964 as ARNOUL II “le Jeune” Cou nt of Flanders, under the guardianship of his father's first cousin Ba udouin Baldzo [de Boulogne] who made himself Comte de Courtrai. Takin g advantage of the weakness of the county during Count Arnoul's minori ty, [his uncle] Dirk II Count of [Holland] captured Gent and Waas, an d Lothaire King of the West Franks occupied the south-east of the coun ty, ostensibly in the role of protector of the young count [2]. To cou nter the perceived threat from France, Emperor Otto II established mar ches on the right bank of the river Schelde, from Valenciennes in th e south to Antwerp in the north [3].
