| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/HAINAUT.htm BAUDOUIN de Flandre, so n of BAUDOUIN VI Count of Flanders, BAUDOUIN I Comte de Hainaut & hi s wife Richilde de Mons Ctss de Hainaut ([1056]-killed near Nikaia 109 8 after 8 Jun). Guibert describes him as "Balduinus comes de Montibus , Roberti Flandrensis comitis iunioris patrui, filius" [1]. "Balduin o frater eius [Arnulphum occiso]" is named in the ''Cartulaire de Sain t-Bertin'' [2]. He succeeded his brother in 1071 as BAUDOUIN II Comt e de Hainaut et de Valenciennes. By agreement at Liège in 1071, procu red by Emperor Heinrich IV King of Germany with the aim of confirmin g the status of the counties of Hainaut and Valenciennes as imperial f iefs, Baudouin's mother (on his behalf) surrendered the two counties t o the emperor, who granted them to the bishop of Liège. The bishop th en granted the counties to Godefroi III "le Bossu" Duke of Lower Lotha ringia, who in turn granted them back to Baudouin and his mother [3] . This process also ensured imperial protection for Hainaut as well a s comte Baudouin III's succession, which no doubt would otherwise hav e been threatened by his uncle Robert I Count of Flanders. "Balduinus , Valenciarum comes, filius Balduini junioris" confirmed the purchas e by the abbot of Hasnon of two mills, for the souls of "patris mei Ba lduini et matris mee Ricildis", by charter dated 1087 [4]. Comte Baudo uin joined the contingent of Godefroi de Bouillon Duke of Lower Lothar ingia (avoiding that of Robert I Count of Flanders) on the First Crusa de in 1096, selling the castle of Couvin to Otbert Bishop of Liège t o raise funds. Otbert Bishop of Liège declared having bought "castell um de Covino" from "comite Balduino de Mont", in the presence of "uxor e ipsius Ida, cum filiis suis Baldewino, Arnulpho, Lodewico, Heinrico" , by charter dated 14 Jun 1096, signed by "Rainerus advocatus, comes W arnerus de Greis, Wedericus de Walecourth…" [5]. William of Tyre nam es "Baudoin comte de Hainaut" among those who left on the First Crusad e with Robert Count of Flanders [6]. Albert of Aix records that "Hugon em Magnum fratrem regis Franciæ, Drogonem et Clareboldum" were held i n chains in prison by the emperor at Constantinople but were release d after the intervention of "Baldewinus Hainaucorum comes et Heinricu s de Ascha" who were sent as envoys by Godefroi de Bouillon [7]. Alber t of Aix names "…Baldewinus de Monte castello, Hainaucorum comes e t princeps…" among those who took part in the siege of Nikaia, date d to mid-1097 from the context [8]. He took part in the siege of Antio ch in 1098. [1] Guibert II.XII, p. 147. [2] Saint-Bertin I.21, p. 19 7. [3] D H IV 242, p. 305, and Murray (2002), p. 34. [4] Duvivier (1 903), 6, p. 17.
