| Nota | Sp. 1° Robert I, figlio di Richard II, 4° Duca di Normandia e di Jud ith de Bretagne. Sp. 2° tra il 1029 e il 1035 Herluin de Conteville W hen she was sixteen gave birth to a son called Richard. The boy's fath er was Gilbert, Count of Brionne, one of the most powerful landowner s in Normandy. As Herleva was not married to Gilbert, the boy became k nown as Richard Fitz Gilbert. The term 'Fitz' was used to show that Ri chard was the illegitimate son of Gilbert. The following year, Herlev a became the mistress of Robert, Duke of Normandy. In 1028, Herleva an d Robert had a son who eventually became known as William, Duke of Nor mandy. Instead of marrying Herleva, Robert persuaded her to marry hi s friend, Herluin of Conteville. After marriage, Herleva had three mor e children, Odo, Robert and Muriel. Later the sons became known as Od o of Bayeux and Robert of Mortain. In 1035, Robert, Duke of Normandy d ied. Although William was illegitimate, he was Robert's only living so n, and so inherited his father's title. Gilbert, Count of Brionne, bec ame William's guardian. A number of Norman barons would not accept a n illegitimate son as their leader and in 1040 an attempt was made t o kill William. The plot failed but they did manage to kill Gilbert o f Brionne. Gilbert of Brionne's large estates in Normandy were now pas sed on to his legitimate son, Baldwin of Flanders. As Richard Fitz Gil bert was illegitimate, he did not receive very much land when his fath er died. When William, Duke of Normandy, decided to invade England i n 1066, he invited his three half-brothers, Richard Fitz Gilbert, Od o of Bayeux and Robert of Mortain to join him. Richard, who had marrie d Rohese, daughter of Walter Giffard of Normandy, also brought with hi m members of his wife's family. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORM ANDY.htm HERLEVE [Arlette], daughter of FULBERT [de Falaise] & his wi fe Doda [Duwa] ---. Guillaume of Jumièges names “Herleva Fulberti c ubicularii ducis filia” as the mother of “Willelmus... ex concubin a Roberti ducis... natus“, and that after Duke Robert died “Herlui nus... miles” married her by whom he had “duos filios Odonem et Ro bertum” [1]. Orderic Vitalis calls her "Duke Robert's concubine", an d records her marriage, referring to her husband as stepfather to Duk e Guillaume [2]. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers t o the mother of Duke Guillaume as "filia… Herbertus pelliparius et u xor eius Doda sive Duwa", specifying that they were from Chaumont in t he diocese of Liège but moved to Falaise, adding that others said the y were from Huy, and refers to her marriage to "Herlewino de Vado comi tis" [3].
