| Nota | http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/HOLLAND.htm DIRK ([920/30]-Egmond 6 M ay 988, bur Egmond). The ''Annales Egmundani'' name "Theodericus secun dus comes filius Theoderici primi" [1]. The ''Chronologia Johannes d e Beke'' records that "Theodricus… secundus Hollandie comes" was th e only son of "Theodricus primus Hollandie comes" & his wife [2]. Hi s birth date range is calculated from his own estimated marriage dat e and the estimated dates of birth of his descendants. "Dominus Theode ricus comes… cum… coniuge sua… Geva" donated property "in vill a Franla… in villa Allecmere… in villa Callinge" to the church o f Egmond, and "dominus Theodericus junior filius prefati Theoderici" e xchanged property "in orientali parte fluminis… Fle" for property "i n villa Nienthorp", by undated charter [3]. He succeeded his father a s DIRK II Count of Holland, although the date is not known. "… Isaa c comitis, Arnulfi filii eius, Theoderici comitis…" signed the chart er dated 8 Jul 941 under which "Arnulfus… regis… marchysus" restor ed property to Saint-Pierre de Gand [4], although it is not known whet her this charter refers to Count Dirk I or Count Dirk II. "Theoderic i comitis" subscribed charters dated 5 May [951/963], 29 Jul [955/64] , 18 Oct 962, 28 Mar 967, 13 Apr 969 and 31 Jan 972 [5]. "… Baldwin i advocati, Theoderici comitis…" signed the charter dated 5 May 96 2 under which "Arnulfus marchysus" donated property to Saint-Pierre d e Gand [6]. According to Nicholas, after the death of Arnoul I Count o f Flanders in 964, Count Dirk occupied Gent and Waas, taking advantag e of the weakness of the government of the county of Flanders during t he minority of Count Arnoul II [7]. However, this may be speculation b ased on an interpretation of the charter dated "DCCC[C]LXVIII[I] Id Ap r… regnante domno Loth[ario] anno XV", under which "Loth[arius]… r ex" granted property "forestum Was[el]a" to "nostro fideli… Theoderi co comiti" at the request of "coniunx nostra Hemma regina" [8]. As exp lained above, it is likely that this charter is spurious. On the othe r hand, the charter dated 28 Mar 965 under which "Theodericus comes e t Baldwinus cognomento Baldzo et Ericus et Everwinus" donated propert y to Saint-Pierre de Gand, for the soul of "senioris sui Arnulfi defun cti" [9], demonstrates that Count Dirk played an active role in Gand a fter the death of Count Arnoul I. The charters dated 11 Apr 969 unde r which "Theodericus comes" donated "sui iuris possessionem… Friling im in pago Flandrensi" to Saint-Pierre de Gand [10], and 30 Sep 972 un der which "Theodericus comes et uxor sua Hildegardis" donated "sui iur is sitam in pago Flandrensi… Clehiham" to Saint-Pierre de Gand [11 ] show that other parts of Flanders were included in Count Dirk´s are a of influence. "Thodericus… comes et Baduuinus et Ericus et Eueruui nus" donated property "sui iuris possessionem… Vualehem… in comita tum Custricense seu Tornacinse" to Saint-Pierre de Gand, in accordanc e with the wishes of "senioris mei Arnulfi defuncti", by charter date d 28 Mar 964 [12]. "Theoderico comite et Arnulfo filio eius, Folbert o advocato… Ingelberto advocato…" signed the charter dated 26 Oc t 970 under which "Mathelgodus et uxor sua Ingelswindis" donated "here ditatem sue possessionis in loco… Wessingim… Siringim… in pago B racbantensi" to Saint-Pierre de Gand [13]. "Theodericus comes et uxo r sua Hildegardis" donated "in villa Haleftra in pago Mempesco sita" t o Saint-Pierre de Gand by charter dated 2 Oct 974, signed by "Arnulf o juniore marchyso, Ingelberto advocato, Hecberto et Arnulfo filiis ip sius Theoderici…" [14]. Egbert Archbishop of Trier donated propert y "de beneficio Luthardi comitis… mortuo sine herede" to St Paul a t Trier by charter dated 981, subscribed by "Theoderici comitis…" [1 5]. "Otto… rex" recognised the rights in property "in comitatibus Ma salant, Kinhem, Texla" of "fideli nostro Theoderico comiti" by charte r dated 25 Aug 985 [16]. This refers to the area now known as the Hoo k of Holland, where Rotterdam was later built, as far north as Gouda , Kennermerland near Haarlem, and the island of Texel in the north o f Holland [17]. "…Theoderico comite, Arnulfo comite, Artoldo comite , Baldwino comite, item Arnulfo comite…" signed the charter date d 1 Apr 988 under which "Baldwinus marchysus cum matre sua Susanna" do nated "villam Aflingehem… jacentem in pago Tornacinse" to Saint-Pier re de Gand, after the death of "Arnulfi marchysi" [18]. The ''Annale s Egmundani'' record the death in 988 of "Theodericus II comes" [19] . The ''Chronologia Johannes de Beke'' records the death "988 II Non M ai" of "domino Theodricus secundus comes Hollandie" and his burial a t Egmond monastery [20]. Beke's ''Egmondsch Necrologium'' records th e death "988 pridie Non Mai" of "Theodericus 2 comes" [21]. [1] ''Ann ales Egmundani'' 985, MGH SS XVI, p. 443.
