Asser records the marriage in 868 of Alfr ed and "a noble Mercian lady, daughter of Athelred surnamed Mucil ear l of the Gaini… [and] Edburga of the royal line of Mercia" [1]. Roge r of Hoveden records the names of her parents, specifying that her mot her was related to the kings of Mercia [2]. Her birth date is estimate d from her having given birth to her first child in 869. "Ealhswith ma ter regis" subscribed a charter of King Edward dated 901 [3]. She foun ded the convent of St Mary's at Winchester, and became a nun there aft er her husband died. [1] Asser, p. 11. [2] Roger of Hoveden I, p. 38 . According to Weir (2002), p. 9, Eadburh was perhaps the daughter o f Cenwulf King of Mercia, although the basis of this hypothesis is no t clear. [3] S 363. |
